By Derek Johnson, II We went to the 2019 National Geographic Contenders Showcase and it was a lot of fun! The held was held at the Greek Theatre next to the observitory. There was free food, free drinks (including alchololic mixes and wine) and most importantly had an entire section to play with and adopt puppies! But seriously, it was very impressive. They had multiple VR stations that allowed you to climb with Free Solo star Alex Honnold and another that would allow you to get close and personal with some of the most dangerous animals in the wild! We got to meet Alex and get a signed book, as well as free signed vynal records from Free Solo's composer Marco Beltrami. They gave cryo-spa facials to show off the NatGeo production Life Below Zero and I can say with confidence that I do not want to live in the Arctic tundra. We talked to the producers of The Story of God, (hosted by Morgan Freeman) and got to score a video live to see what the experience is like. Another cool thing is that they had a classic arcade section with nature based 16 bit games. After the fun and games, they took us to the amphitheater and did a live scoring of Alex's new climb. They also did a second live scoring of The Flood (narrated by Angela Bassett). The whole event was hosted by Morgan Freeman, so you know it was good! We saw behind the scenes and exclusive content from Nat Geo's upcoming content like The Hot Zone, Valley of the Boom, The Story of God, Hostile Planet and more! National Geographic showed that they have changed a lot and that they are definitely keeping up with other outlets when it comes to having compelling content. I think the biggest surprise in this was their bold decision to extend into more true based stories instead of just documentaries. Only time will tell if they keep up, but from what we saw their defiantly someone to keep your eyes on.

By Eric Alt The writers get the chance to shine at the 2019 WGA Awards. Writers were nominated for an award in categories ranging from Screenplay, documentary, animation, and the relative newcomer Videogame. Film Newsies was able to catch up with some of the nominees and winners of the 2019 WGA Awards. Bill Hader, 2019’s winner for new series Barry, stopped by and gave an introspective look at his process of writing. Writing legends Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel also stopped to talk to one of our correspondents. The writing duo who have achieved success with the ahead of the curve baseball comedy, A League of their Own and City Slickers showed the success that long term cooperation is very possible with screenwriting. The winner of best original screenplay category was a newcomer to feature scripts, however he has been writing for the past decade primarily on his stand-up, Bo Burnham. His coming of age story, Eighth Grade was able to capture the complexities and struggles of growing up, which resonates with audiences and is able to speak to the younger selves in all of us, as well as, being relatable to the youth of today.
